This is a
small segment from the Bayeux Tapestry embroidered by monks in an
Anglo-Saxon workshop around 1068 using linen cloth and various
colours of wool. It measures 70 metres long and 50 centimetres
wide and retraces all the events of the conquest of England by
William the Conqueror. At that time warriors and
soldiers were covered from head to foot in chain mail and it was
extremely difficult on the battlefield to distinguish between
friend and foe. So a means of identification evolved using
different markings on their shields - and heraldry as we know it
began.
Our small
company enjoys the proximity of another famous battlefield,
Culloden, overlooking the Moray Firth. We are proud of the
reputation we have earned making high quality hand embroidered
products, and although we use quite different techniques to those
used in the Bayeux Tapestry, we know that everything we make will
become a treasured heirloom for future generations.
We research
carefully the origins of each surname from our extensive
reference library and once you have decided which product you
want, we make that product just for you. Every embroidery is made
using the gold and silver metallic threads, gold and silver
fabrics, and cotton embroidery threads on a background of felt,
tartan, satinised cotton or dupion silk with just enough padding
to give a wonderful three dimensional effect.
